Silent Dialogues
A series of sculptural heads exploring the quiet language of emotion and human connection. Reduced to essential forms, each piece leaves space for the viewer’s own interpretation.
Feelings
Feelings is the first sculpture in my series exploring human relationships through simplified forms.
I was interested in the quiet intimacy of resting your head on someone else's shoulder and, in turn, feeling that gesture gently returned. It is such a simple physical gesture, yet it can express so much - trust, comfort, affection, reassurance and a sense of belonging.
I deliberately left the relationship between the two figures open to interpretation. They could be lovers, friends, siblings, a parent and child, or simply two people who share a moment of closeness. By removing detail and identity, I wanted the viewer to bring their own experiences and emotions to the work.
The two forms lean naturally into one another, creating a sense of balance and mutual support. Working in stucco allows me to reduce the human figure to its essential lines and curves, allowing the relationship between the figures to become the focus.
Thoughts
Thoughts is the second sculpture in my series exploring human relationships through simplified forms.
Where Feelings is concerned with physical closeness, Thoughts explores the invisible space between two people - the things we think, feel and communicate without necessarily being able to see them.
The two heads are separate and can be moved into different positions. They might face one another as though engaged in conversation, turn away in disagreement, sit quietly side by side, or suggest a moment of uncertainty or distance. Each arrangement creates a slightly different relationship and a new story.
I like the idea that the sculpture is never completely fixed. The viewer becomes part of the work by deciding how the two figures should relate to one another.
As with Feelings, I have deliberately simplified the forms. Without facial expressions or other details to tell us what the figures are thinking, the space between them becomes important. Thoughts is about communication, silence, understanding and all the things that can exist between two people without ever being spoken.
